Born in Atlanta, Georgia, 19-year-old Mike Lawrence has always been enthused with cars. Since he could walk he has always had a car in his hands or a car on the mind. Though his passion started at an early age he began to shift his focus to custom cars as he got older. At this point he delved into the world of design and engineering. Currently finishing high school he is on his way to an unparalleled career in custom street rod design and fabrication. Constantly designing custom cars and unique parts, models became his outlet for his mind.
Mike has always seen things differently than other people. When he sees an object he separates it into basic shapes and lines to examine the flow of design. As he got older he was able hone in this ability to produce clean flowing art on wheels. Wanting to transform his designs from mind to movement he turned to modeling. As he began to rework the bodies from model kits he realized that the sense of flow in his design could never be obtained from modifying something that already exists. "An object has predefined shapes, the best place to start is a blank canvas", Mike proclaims. It was at this point he moved to scratch building. Although he never finished a model before, he thought scratch building would be an easier method to portray an eloquent sculpture of lines. Mikes natural zeal was noticed quickly by his drafting teacher who wanted to see him pursue his passion. His design ability quickly led him into and independent drafting/engineering class where designing custom cars became his primary assignment. Utilizing this class he began to design and engineer the custom street rod from the figment of his imagination. Not only did he draft mechanical drawings of custom parts he actually began to build prototypes in class for a grade. As a part of a school project Mike is finally able to express his passion for design. During the summer of 2006 Mike worked with Model Cars Magazine to start developing a series of scratch build articles. The editor had come across Mike's work, noticing his talent he quickly commissioned Mike to write articles to teach others his way of building. Shortly after turning 18 the first article appeared in print in the August 2006 issue of Model Cars Magazine. The series will continue through 2007 and beyond, covering techniques of scratch building, in-depth spreads of his projects, and continue to create his builder profile.
